About the role

The function holder will have to contribute to the success of Umicore’s agenda by turning intellectual property into a competitive advantage for all business units (including New Business Incubation) of Umicore.


What you will be doing?


The areas of responsibilities includes:

  • On the offensive side, stimulate protecting Umicore’s innovations by selected patenting, both with a view to exclusive commercialization of our innovation as well as creating alternative monetization opportunities for licensing-out (including cross-licensing) and/or divestment of unused patents. In this regard, in close collaboration with the business units, oversee that Umicore strives for a right balance between having a portfolio that includes patents on a given technology at a given time to serve the Umicore strategy and a portfolio that consists of high-quality patents
  • On the defensive side, manage and further develop risk management systems for the proactive yet efficient review of third-party patents and patent applications to ensure freedom-to-operate (monitoring, selected invalidation, selected licensing-in)
  • Lead the multi-site, multi-continent team by stimulating team cohesion, collaboration, knowledge sharing and building efficiencies, while respecting local and business-specific differences
  • Supervise, motivate and coach the team members and support their development and well-being
  • Pro-actively stimulate a continued improvement mindset within the team regarding its own way of working, including KPIs and digitalization opportunities
  • Ensure that the team members remain sufficiently embedded in the business units and R&D community; bring strategic perspective to the IP team’s operations by taking into account the diversity between business units and R&D projects, taking into account their respective long-term strategies and technology roadmaps
  • Develop and maintain contacts with peers in industry to remain ‘best in class’
  • Define, propose, defend and manage the IP budget


Who we are looking for


You are an ideal candidate for us as you:

  • Have an academic background in engineering or science (technical college or university) or equivalent
  • Posses at least 10 years of experience with business value creation out of IP, ideally with manufacturing companies; of that 5 years in leadership functions
  • Have gained experience working with companies in fast paced high technology growth atmosphere is a plus
  • Have sound knowledge on the mechanics and terminology of IP related processes such as patent filing, prosecution, freedom-to-operate, invalidation, enforcement etc.
  • Have gained experience with improving efficiency and effectiveness of (IP related) processes
  • Possess strong leadership and people management skills, both hierarchically and in multi-functional matrix organizations; team player
  • Have strong business acumen and ability to connect with business leaders, assess rapidly risks and offer solutions
  • Are a strategic thinker and possess excellent negotiation skills
  • Are result driven and have the ability to work under pressure and set the right priority while handling multiple tasks
  • Have excellent networking and relationship building skills
  • Have clear and transparent communication skills including in a cross-cultural context
  • Show pronounced international interest and valuing diversity
  • Are fluent in English (written and spoken), knowledge of German, Dutch and/or French is a plus
